What Is a Green Real Estate Agent? Eco-Friendly Buyers Should Know

Across the country, builders are on a mission to reduce America’s energy footprint, and maybe make some money, by producing eco-friendlier homes. The U.S. Green Building Council estimates 40% to 48% of new residential construction will be green this year.

But it’s not just builders who are going green—brokers are, too. Through the National Association of Realtors® Green REsource Council, agents get the tools to understand the ways eco-friendly homes can benefit buyers.

“NAR’s Green Designation is an education program that addresses sustainability in real estate,” said Amanda Stinton, manager of NAR Green. “The course requirements address everything from home rating systems to energy efficiency to how agents can show clients the benefits of a greener community or lifestyle.”

Realtors® who complete the course receive NAR’s Green Designation.

Green agents can help you identify homes that are green-certified and meet energy-efficiency standards. But these agents don’t sell just newly built sustainable properties. Having an expert in your corner during your house hunt can help you choose the right home for an eco-makeover.

But the job often goes beyond finding green-certified properties to helping buyers in many other ways, including the following:

 - Recognizing energy-inefficient homes before they buy
 - Assessing the value and curb appeal of adding solar panels
 - Identifying the best brands for upgrades
 - Identifying where eco-friendly upgrades can be beneficial and where they’re unnecessary
 - Conducting a complimentary energy audit
